Swiss Edge, straight edge or live edge: what is the difference?

Deens ovale mangohouten eettafel met Swiss Edge in een lichte eetkamer

With a straight edge the side is finished straight, so you see the full 5 cm thickness of the top: robust and timeless. A Swiss Edge is bevelled, so the same 5 cm looks thinner and lighter, and a live edge follows the natural shape of the tree trunk, so no two tables are the same. With us you will find the straight edge on round and oval mango wood tables, the Swiss Edge on round and Danish oval tables in mango wood and oak, and the live edge on the rectangular mango wood table.

What is a Swiss Edge?

A Swiss Edge is an edge that is bevelled instead of straight. That means you do not see the full thickness of the top from the side. The table looks slimmer and lighter, while the top remains a sturdy 5 cm thick. That refined line suits light, calm interiors and a black steel spider base.

What is the difference between a straight edge and a Swiss Edge?

The difference lies in how heavy the table looks. A straight edge shows the full 5 cm of solid wood and feels bold and solid. A Swiss Edge makes the same table look lighter. If you have a small dining room or a lot of other dark furniture, a Swiss Edge gives more calm. If you want to show that the table is solid, choose the straight edge.

What is a live edge table?

With a live edge, the long side of the top is not sawn straight. The edge follows the natural shape of the trunk, with waves and small irregularities. That makes every table unique. Our rectangular Live Edge dining table is made of natural mango wood and stands on a matt black steel base. It comes in sizes from 160 × 90 to 240 × 100 cm.

Which edge do you choose for which shape?

If you are looking for a round table, you have the most choice. The round Edwin with a straight edge comes in 95 to 150 cm in natural, black or natural with a black edge. The round Swiss Edge in mango wood comes in natural from 100 to 140 cm, the oak version in natural or black in 110, 130 and 150 cm. For oval, choose the Milo with a straight edge or a Danish oval table with a Swiss Edge. A live edge is only available as a rectangle. See all combinations among our dining tables.

Which edge is easiest to maintain?

There is little difference. All tops are matt lacquered, so you wipe them with a slightly damp cloth and dry them. A live edge has more curves along the edge. Crumbs get caught there a little more easily, but you can wipe them out in no time with a soft cloth.

Can you also choose the edge on a separate table top?

Yes. Our table tops come with a straight edge, Swiss Edge and live edge, in mango wood and partly in oak. An oval mango wood top with a Swiss Edge, for example, is only available as a separate top. How to choose the right base is explained in our guide combining a table top and base yourself.

Which edge suits your interior?

  • Warm and rustic, or a busy family table: straight edge in natural mango wood.
  • Light, Scandinavian or Japandi: Swiss Edge in natural mango wood or oak.
  • Sleek and dark, with black steel: Swiss Edge or straight edge in black.
  • Bold, with brick, plants and lots of wood: live edge.

Frequently asked questions about table edges

What does Swiss Edge mean on a table?

Swiss Edge is a bevelled edge. It makes the top look thinner and lighter than it is.

Is a Swiss Edge table thinner?

No. Just as with the straight edge, the top is 5 cm thick. Only the edge is bevelled.

Does every live edge table have a different edge?

Yes. The edge follows the natural shape of the trunk, so no two tables are exactly the same.

Is a live edge table also available in black or round?

No. Our live edge table is only available as a rectangle in natural mango wood.

Which Swiss Edge tables are available in oak?

A round table of 110, 130 or 150 cm and a Danish oval table of 180 × 90 or 220 × 110 cm, both in natural or black.
