For 2 to 4 people, a 95 or 100 cm round dining table is enough. If you want four people to sit generously or a fifth sometimes joins, choose 105 or 110 cm. For the dining area, allow the diameter plus 2.3 metres: a 100 cm table fits in a space of at least 3.3 × 3.3 metres. If one side of the table is against the wall, a depth of 2.15 metres is enough.

Diameter Daily Maximum Space minimum (70 cm walkway) Space by the kitchen (90 cm walkway) Against the wall (depth)
95 cm 2 to 4 5 3.3 × 3.3 m 3.7 × 3.7 m 2.1 m
100 cm 2 to 4 5 3.3 × 3.3 m 3.7 × 3.7 m 2.15 m
105 cm 4 to 5 6 3.4 × 3.4 m 3.8 × 3.8 m 2.2 m
110 cm 4 to 5 6 3.4 × 3.4 m 3.8 × 3.8 m 2.25 m

We allow 65 cm of table edge per person for comfortable seating and 55 cm as a maximum. Against the wall = one side without a chair; the depth is then the diameter plus 1.15 metres.

Which size round dining table do you choose for 2, 3 or 4 people?

2 people

For two, 95 cm is more than enough. There is room for plates, a dish and a laptop if you also work at the table. Our smallest round dining table is the Edwin in mango wood, 95 cm. If you often have visitors, 100 cm gives you a little more leeway.

3 people

For three, 95 or 100 cm is also a good size. Everyone has well over a metre of table edge. If you push the table against the wall, three people still sit comfortably.

4 people

Four people eat comfortably at 95 or 100 cm. If you eat with four every day and often have pans on the table, go for 105 or 110 cm. That leaves room in the middle. Looking for a table for five or more? Then first read our size guide for round dining tables from 95 to 150 cm.

How much space do you need in a kitchen or dining nook?

A chair pushed back takes up about 45 cm. Behind that you want at least 70 cm of walking space. If the table stands next to the worktop or in the route to the kitchen, allow 90 cm. Then someone can pass behind the chairs while cooking is going on.

In a dining nook that is only open on one or two sides, you do not need to allow walking space everywhere. On the wall side nobody sits behind you, so the chair itself is enough there. So measure the sides where people actually walk.

Tip: lay a sheet roughly the size of the table on the floor and place your chairs around it. Walk past it a few times, also with a tray in your hands.

Central base or four legs in a small space?

In a small space a central base works best. There are no legs at your knees, so chairs slide fully under the table and an extra chair fits easily. A round table with four legs sometimes seats one person fewer. Most of our round tables stand on a black steel matrix base (a spider base) in the middle. The oak models have adjustable feet, handy on a floor that is not completely level.

Round, square or small rectangular?

A 100 cm round table takes up 0.79 m² of floor. A square table of 100 × 100 cm is 1 m². So round looks lighter, you do not bump into corners and you walk around it more easily. Especially in a square dining nook or a through-room, round is the smartest choice.

A small rectangular table suits a narrow, long kitchen better, where two of you sit opposite each other and the table stands with its long side against the wall. If you eat with three or four people, a round table is more sociable: everyone faces each other and nobody sits on a corner.

How do you get more out of a small dining nook?

Small round wooden table with a bench in a cosy kitchen corner

  • Put a bench along the wall. You do not need to walk behind a bench, so you quickly gain 70 cm compared with chairs plus walking space. A short bench or a corner bench works best with a round table.
  • Push the table against the wall. For two or three people you do not need to leave the table free-standing. When visitors come, pull it forward and sit with four.
  • Choose light, open chairs. Chairs without armrests slide further under the top and make the space look more open.
  • Hang a lamp low above the middle. That marks out the dining area, even if it is in the living room or kitchen.

Which small round dining tables do we have?

In our round dining tables collection, the smallest sizes are:

  • Edwin, mango wood natural or black: from 95 cm, in 5 cm steps (95, 100, 105, 110 cm and larger), straight edge.
  • Edwin, mango wood natural with black edge: from 100 cm, in 10 cm steps.
  • Swiss Edge, mango wood natural: from 100 cm, with bevelled edge.
  • Swiss Edge, oak natural or black: from 110 cm.

All tables are 76 cm high and have a solid 5 cm thick top. The top is matt lacquered, so stains and moisture have less chance.
