A 100 cm round dining table seats 4 people comfortably, 120 cm seats 5 (maximum 6), 130 cm seats 6 and 150 cm seats 7 (maximum 8). For the room, allow the diameter of the table plus about 2.3 metres: a 120 cm table fits in a dining room of at least 3.5 × 3.5 metres.

Diameter People comfortably People maximum Room minimum Room comfortable
95 cm 4 5 3.3 × 3.3 m 3.7 × 3.7 m
100 cm 4 5 3.3 × 3.3 m 3.7 × 3.7 m
110 cm 5 6 3.4 × 3.4 m 3.8 × 3.8 m
120 cm 5 6 3.5 × 3.5 m 3.9 × 3.9 m
130 cm 6 7 3.6 × 3.6 m 4.0 × 4.0 m
140 cm 6 8 3.7 × 3.7 m 4.1 × 4.1 m
150 cm 7 8 3.8 × 3.8 m 4.2 × 4.2 m

Comfortable = about 65 cm of table edge per person. Maximum = about 55 cm: handy for a birthday, tight for every day.

Our round Edwin table in mango wood comes in 5 cm steps, from 95 to 150 cm; the other round models in 10 cm steps. If you are torn between two sizes in the table, the in-between size (105, 115, 125, 135 or 145 cm) is often exactly right.

How to calculate the right size

Three numbers decide whether a round table fits: the space per person, the chair and the walking space around it.

  • Seat width: allow 65 cm of table edge per person for comfortable seating, 55 cm if it may be a little tight. The edge of a round table is the diameter × 3.14. A 120 cm table therefore has 377 cm of edge: room for 5 people comfortably, or 6 at a squeeze.
  • Chair: a chair pushed back takes up about 45 cm.
  • Walking space: leave at least 70 cm free behind the chairs to walk past, 90 cm if someone often needs to pass behind the chairs, for example to the kitchen.

So the room must be at least the diameter plus 2 × (45 + 70) cm: diameter + 2.3 metres. For 120 cm that is 3.5 metres. If you want to sit generously, allow an extra 2.7 metres.

Tip: lay a sheet or blanket on the floor in the size of the table and place the chairs around it. You will see straight away whether you can still get past comfortably.

Which size do you choose in your situation?

95 to 110 cm: 4 to 6 people in a smaller space

These sizes fit in an apartment, a dining nook in the kitchen or next to the sofa in an open-plan living room. With 95 or 100 cm you can eat comfortably with four. If you regularly have a fifth guest, go for 110 cm. In a small space a round table takes up less room than a rectangular one, because there are no corners sticking out.

115 to 125 cm: 5 people comfortably, maximum 6

At 120 cm a family of four sits generously, and six is still possible. It fits in a dining room 3.5 to 4 metres wide. Choose 125 cm if you often eat with six but the room is just too tight for 130 cm.

130 to 135 cm: 6 people comfortably, maximum 7

From 130 cm, six adults sit comfortably, with room for serving dishes in the middle. You need a room of at least 3.6 metres. This is a good choice if you regularly have guests or if the table also serves as a workspace.

140 to 150 cm: 6 to 8 people

A round table of 140 or 150 cm is a real eye-catcher in a spacious dining room or an open-plan kitchen. With eight people, 150 cm is still sociable, but the middle of the table becomes hard to reach. A lazy Susan in the middle helps. Do you often eat with eight or more? Then an oval dining table is often more practical.

Shape, base and height: what else to look for?

Round or oval? A round table is more sociable: everyone faces each other and nobody sits at the head. Oval is more practical if you eat with more than eight people or if the room is long and narrow. Not sure? Read about the difference between a Danish oval, oval and rectangular dining table.

Central base or four legs? Most of our round tables stand on a black steel matrix base (a spider base) in the middle. So there are no legs at your knees, and you can easily pull up an extra chair. With a four-legged table, a round table sometimes seats one person fewer.

Height: our round dining tables are 76 cm high. That suits a chair with a seat height of 45 to 48 cm.

Table top: the top is 5 cm thick and made of solid mango wood, matt lacquered against stains and moisture. You can choose a straight edge or a bevelled Swiss Edge, in natural or black. Prefer oak? There is also a round oak table in 110, 130 or 150 cm.
